CASE STUDY
(The name and identifying details have been changed.)

When Janet, 53, came to work with me, she was depressed and anxious. She was swimming in a sea of shock, unable to stop thinking about recent traumatic events. Three years ago, her mother and brother died suddenly from illness. They were her last-remaining family members. At the same time, her interior-decorating business suffered a major down-turn.

Then she was diagnosed with breast cancer, and was treated with chemotherapy and radiation. She began using pain medication and became addicted to it, and went through in-patient drug rehab.

Luckily Janet's cancer now was in remission, and she was off pain pills. But Janet was traumatized by the devastating events she just went through. She was suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

I began to help Janet by using hypnosis to teach her breathing and relaxation techniques. She practiced this daily. It helped her reduce her numbness and shock, and let her feel relaxed again.

Janet hadn't talked to anyone about these devastating life events. She didn't even want to talk about it with me. She just wanted it all to "go away," like some bad dream. But I pointed out that keeping her feelings bottled up inside made her re-live it, over and over again.

So Janet started to share with me. Through a number of sessions she cried, grieved, and got angry. Slowly, Janet's feelings were being resolved by talking about it in a safe and supportive place.

We also started to change the many negative thought patterns built up over the past few years. We worked on identifying unhelpful thoughts. I helped her create new, realistic and supportive thoughts that let her get control of her life again.

I encouraged Janet to get more involved with her addiction recovery group. She began to benefit from the support and love she received there. She started to see the group as a new "family" for her.

Janet began to feel hopeful about her future. She was building a new life, and was feeling much more happy, peaceful and in control.
