CASE STUDY
(The name and identifying details have been changed.)

John, 43, came to see me for help because he was constantly worried and nervous about a number of things. He liked his job in a department store, but his boss was difficult, and John feared he'd get fired. He felt stressed and walked on "eggshells" at work all the time.

He loved taking part in different activities at his church. But often he felt overwhelmed and anxious from the continuous demands.

His relationship with his wife was mostly good. At times, though, she complained a lot about many different things. John often felt tense and angry and helpless about her complaints.

John was suffering with Generalized Anxiety Disorder.

He was "on the go" all the time, and didn't know how to relax and enjoy some leisure time. So, I first taught him deep, progressive relaxation techniques. I made CDs for him to practice how to calm down and unwind at home. He learned how to put more balance between work and rest.

John also learned how to set better limits with his involvement at church. I taught him communication skills so he could say "no" to some activities. Setting limits then allowed him to enjoy taking part in church events.

John suffered from some low self-esteem, which added to his fear of being fired at work. I helped him identify the real strengths and qualities he possessed, so that he could recognize his good job performance. I taught him how to be more assertive with his boss. He started to feel more confident at work I helped John strategize how to handle his wife's complaints so that he remained more relaxed, peaceful and in control of himself.

John started to enjoy life a lot more. He was more at ease, happier, and in control of his choices and decisions. He also discovered he got pleasure from slowing down the pace of his life.
