Mary, age 48, came to see me because she'd been suffering for years with anxiety and panic attacks and recently it had been getting worse.

Mary had begun dreaming of doing some different things with her life. She longed to take a day trip up to the mountains. But every time she started to drive there, she began to panic and had to turn back and go home.

She belonged to a woman's social club, and was the treasurer. But she'd get really anxious when she stood up at the meeting to give her report, and often was afraid she was going to faint.

Even a leisurely outing to the mall had become increasingly difficult. She'd start to panic and have to leave. She was having more panic attacks around her husband and friends when they went out to a restaurant or a movie. She was terrified of being away from her home, trapped in the middle of a panic attack.

In our counseling sessions, I began helping Mary by leading her through deep, progressive relaxation processes. This started to calm, soothe and relax her anxious mind and body. She started to experience deep peace. I made personalized CDs of the relaxation techniques for Mary to use at home. She was teaching her mind and body to feel relaxed again.

We began to change her behaviors in order to feel more comfortable and confident in situations that were panicking her. For example, we mapped out a slow-but-sure plan to help her drive up the mountain successfully by herself. We tackled each of her anxiety-producing situations a step at a time. She started to feel stronger and more at ease in different situations.

I helped Mary identify the thought patterns that added to her anxiety and panic. We developed more constructive ways for her to think about herself and her life. She began to feel better about herself, and more optimistic. She was taking control of her life again.
